What is the one thing an online community builder shouldn’t do? To complicate entry processes. It sounds obvious – it’s something retailers and hoteliers have known for centuries – but the venom sits in the word ‘complicate’. The trade-offs that must be made are complex by themselves..

I raise this topic to share with you some of the experiences I’ve gained over the last couple of months in building, developing and promoting GBLCG.com. The one all-encompassing objective I worked towards was to make this site an attractive and preferred destination for Facebook Friends who want to exchange and share information that can help them advance their personal and professional objectives.

Because I work best when I can measure my performance against targets I plotted graphed the ‘where I want to be’s’ on an A3-sized sheet and stuck that above my desk. Each week I took stock of my membership and plotted results manually against a target growth line. To my surprise, the lines kept pace, which made me think that I under-rated my targets.

I solved that last weekend by posting a much more challenging graph, which now shows that I am actually under-performing in the Membership Gaining stakes.

Our GBLCG.com LikeList Page enables you to expand your Facebook Friend networks by leveraging YouTube’s treasure trove.

Although the page is a third-party application and operates outside Facebook’s domain it is intrinsically and securely linked to Facebook’s platform. Updates to GBLCG.com’s LikeList Page are automatically forwarded to Facebook where they appear as Wall Posts. Wall Posts only appear on the Facebook Wall of the person who published a new entry on the LikeList Page.

In many respects, the GBLCG.com LikeList Page acts and behaves like Facebook. Posts can be uploaded by anyone, which others can comment on and ‘Like’. Both comments and ‘Like’ notifications are posted immediately on Facebook, enticing other Friends to respond to a LikeList entry. This allows the person who published a LikeList Page post to continue separate conversations on the post – one at Facebook and one on the LikeList Page.

GBLCG.com’s Facebook Fan Page now informs our Facebook Friends what we stand for, what we’re up to and where we are going with GBLCG.com.

Essentially, our Facebook Fan Page acts as an extension of GBLCG.com and will include links to the articles, blogs and posts we and our members publish. In the near future this page will provide a clear and consistent overview of the discussions we host on our site.

Obviously, the page’s main objective is to increase our GBLCG.com membership. To achieve this we will put considerable thought in the way we post our links and in the development of the publications they link to.

With the remake of GBLCG.com to a site where forward-thinking members can discuss ideas on how to make their businesses more competitive, we will now be looking for members who can feed their observations on how businesses change globally back to our community.

GBLCG.com is gradually growing into the community we wanted it to be when we established it. We wanted the site to remain different from most other business-focused sites.

To keep achieving this wanted to give members considerable degrees of control over how they wanted to interact with each other and with us.

Our thinking is that you, as member, should be able to raise your own topics for discussion, either to find answers to questions you may have, to put additional thinking behind business ideas or to provoke some ‘creative’ debates among the groups to which you belong.

LinkedIn is under fire by Facebook and could be overtaken by two start-ups as early as mid 2012....

Professionals in the acquisition industry have recognised LinkedIn as one major force in the corporate recruiting market, not in the least because its growth has dramatically impacted many of the big players in this market. Many of the larger executive recruitment firms like Heidrick and Struggles, Korn Ferry, and Spencer Stuart saw the value of their proprietary executive networks eroding by LinkedIn.
